Customizing AI Character Cards for Group Chat RP in HammerAI
How to make your AI cast feel like actual people in a room, not carbon copies
If you’ve ever used HammerAI to chat with one of your characters, you already know how cool it is. But if you’ve tried throwing a bunch of characters into one chat and it turned into a chaotic mess, you’re not alone.
Group RP with AI is a totally different vibe from one-on-one chats. You can’t just drop in five random character cards and expect magic. If you want the scene to feel like a real conversation, you need to put in a little prep when creating or editing your character cards.
Let me show you how to make it work.
Why group chats feel so messy (at first)
One-on-one chats are easy. You talk, the AI replies, done. But in a group? That’s where things get tricky. Sometimes characters all talk at once. Or nobody talks at all unless you constantly tell them to. Or worse, they all start sounding like each other.
If that’s happening, it’s not the AI’s fault. Most of the time, it just means your character cards weren’t built with group interaction in mind.
Here’s how to fix that.
Give each character a specific role in the group
Don’t just think about their personality. Think about what position they take when there are other people in the room. Who’s the loud one? Who always stays quiet until it’s serious? Who tries to keep the peace, or stir the pot?
When you build the character card, say what they’re like around others. Even a simple label like “quiet strategist” or “overconfident leader” helps the AI figure out how to act.
Include dialogue samples that show how they treat other characters
This is probably the most important part.
Most people write dialogue samples that talk to the user. That works for solo chats, but in group RP, your AI needs to know how to talk to each other.
Here’s a weak example:
“I trust you. You’ve always had my back.”
That’s too generic and focused on just the user.
Here’s a stronger one:
“Vera, I know what you’re thinking, and no, I’m not going to back down.”
That teaches the AI to respond directly to another character, not just sit there waiting for you to talk.
Try to include at least two or three lines like that in each character card.
Make sure personalities don’t overlap too much
When everyone has the same tone, energy, or way of speaking, it feels like you’re just talking to five versions of the same person.
Use personality sliders in HammerAI to give each character their own flavor. Make one sarcastic, one serious, one kind but anxious, one loud and emotional.
You want contrast. That’s what makes scenes interesting. If everyone is calm and rational, nothing happens. If everyone is dramatic, it turns into a mess.
Mix it up.
Give them reasons to care about each other
Backstory isn’t just about where they came from. It’s also about how they feel about the other people in the room.
If two characters know each other or have history, write that in.
Stuff like:
- Still resents Mika for leaving them behind.
- Worried that Eli is going to crack under pressure.
- Has a secret crush on Quinn but refuses to admit it.
This gives the AI more to work with when it’s deciding how to react to what another character says. The more you tie them together, the more natural the conversations will feel.
Use reminders to help the AI stay in character
If a character is supposed to act a certain way, say it clearly in the description or sample lines.
You can include things like:
- Always interrupts when they get excited
- Avoids talking about their past unless forced to
- Talks in short, clipped sentences. Rarely jokes
You don’t need to overdo it. Just one or two strong behavioral notes can help the AI stick to the personality you want, even in longer group chats.
How to actually run a group RP without it getting chaotic
Here’s how to keep the group scene moving:
Say names when you talk
Mentioning a character by name helps guide the AI to have that character respond.
Rae, don’t act like this isn’t your fault.
That gives the AI a clear signal.
Set the scene a little
You don’t need to write a whole paragraph, but give the AI some context.
The room is silent. The power just went out. Everyone’s looking at each other.
This helps the AI respond in character, based on the mood.
Let the characters bounce off each other
You don’t need to drive every reply. Sometimes you can just set something up and watch them talk to each other. That’s where the magic happens.
Quick scene ideas to test your cast
If you want to try out your group, here are a few setups that work great:
Fantasy inn argument
A thief, a knight, a priest, and a bard argue over how to split the reward money.
Dystopian resistance base
One wants to run, one wants to fight, one wants to surrender, one has a secret plan.
High school friend group
Someone’s big secret just got exposed. Drama unfolds fast.
These scenes force your characters to take sides, speak up, and reveal their true colors.
Final thoughts
Group RP with AI in HammerAI isn’t just for chaos or jokes. With the right setup, it can feel surprisingly real. Like you’re sitting at a table with characters who actually know each other.
But it starts with good character cards. If you build them with group interaction in mind, with strong personalities, clear roles, and connections to each other, the AI will do the rest.
You’re not just writing characters. You’re building chemistry.
And when that clicks, it’s wild how real it can feel.
